Dato: 10.10.2024 Svartype: Med merknad Hi, I am disappointed to hear about the proposal to change the Immigration Act’s rules on family immigration, specifically that single parents over the age of 60 will no longer be entitled to family reunification with their adult children in Norway. I would like to express my strong opposition to this proposal. Taking care of elderly single parents is important for all families; it is not just a family matter but also a basic human right. We have always appreciated that Norway provides the opportunity for family reunification. This support helps young immigrant populations settle down, focus on their jobs, pay taxes, and contribute to society. If it becomes impossible to care for elderly single parents, I am afraid many good immigrant families will leave, which would be a disadvantage to Norwegian society as well. I fully agree with the principle that families should be able to support themselves if they come for family immigration. However, I suggest that the proposal consider the contributions versus the costs of immigrant families on a case-by-case basis. This is similar to the situation for issuing visas, where there is a minimum income requirement, and assessments are done individually. Therefore, if the new proposal maintains the possibility for family reunification while ensuring that families can support themselves, I believe that would be a much better approach. Thank you.
